The SS Tilawa - A Story of Service, Tragedy and Discovery


The SS Tilawa was a 10,000-ton passenger and cargo liner operated by the British India Steam Navigation Company. On her final voyage, the ship departed Bombay (now Mumbai) for Durban, carrying nearly 1,000 people, including 732 passengers. On the 23rd November 1942, tragically the ship was attacked and sunk by a Japanese submarine during World War II, claiming 280 lives.
