In 2013, Argentum Exploration was formed by Ross Hyett to fund the mission to locate the wreck of the SS Tilawa, a ship lost during World War II in the depths of the Indian Ocean. The initial search was conducted with the assistance of Sverker Hallstrom's Team aboard the Seaway Invincible, utilising a towed Edgetech side-scan sonar system. Despite the team's extensive efforts and the coverage of a large search area, the mission faced a time constraint, and the team had to leave the site for prior commitments.

THE SEARCH

A Strategic Return

The initial search was worthwhile; the data collected by Sverker Hallstrom's team provided invaluable insights that helped Argentum narrow down the search area. With a focused strategy based on this information, Argentum returned to the site determined to complete the mission. The refined search area targeted a zone Sverker's team hadn't yet covered - one that analysis suggested was a likely location for the ship's sinking.

THE DISCOVERY

After months of planning and careful execution, Argentum Exploration successfully located the wreck of the SS Tilawa. On 4th December 2014, the discovery was confirmed when the nameplate of the ship was identified on its side (see below), marking an emotional and joyous moment for the team. This breakthrough was the culmination of meticulous research, advanced technology, and collaboration with skilled experts.
